Who is the course for?

For beginners you will learn about a range of materials and processes in sculpture, including wood, stone and mixed media construction to develop your own bespoke pieces. For more advanced learners this tutored workshop will enable you to develop your own ideas further. We use traditional materials but are always expanding our repertoire to connect with contemporary practice, finding inspiration from current trends to the classics.

What level is the course?

All levels welcome

What previous knowledge/experience/skills are required?

No previous experience of sculpture is necessary.

The course is structured over a year but can be under taken on a termly basis.

What will the course cover and what can I expect to do by the end of it?

You will learn how to use different tools and the properties of different materials including how casting works and the difference between working with metals and organic materials. You will learn how to sculpt for example - wood and stone as well as explore mixed media construction to develop your own bespoke pieces. You will develop a greater understanding and appreciation of the sculptural process.

By the end of the course you will be able to;

  • Use core sculpture techniques and materials.
  • Use hand tools and manipulate materials.
  • Develop and research your own project ideas
  • Produce your own sculpture during the course
  • Use high standards of health and safety practice.

What teaching and learning methods will be used on the course?

The programme is taught through tutor demonstration, group discussions, sharing skills and knowledge within the group and most importantly through developing your own practice, we share skills and ideas in a friendly, safe and supportive atmosphere. This class is tailored to your individual needs.

New Students: After an initial assessment all new students will be inducted into the class and asked what they would like to make and examples of finished work explain and a discussion and help to develop their ideas prior to embarking in their piece.
Returning /Ongoing Students: Will continue ongoing personal projects, researching new techniques and processes and expand and further their practice.

How do we assess your progress on the course?

Assessment on the course is continual observation, peer feedback and 1/1 discussion around your individual learning plan to support your personal development.

What can I do after completing this course?

You might choose to display your work at WMC, you can continue to develop your skills on this course, set up your own studio, consider enrolling for other 3d courses at WMC. Some students have used this course to progress onto courses with qualifications including degree level sculpture at several London art colleges/universities.

What extra study/practice am I expected to do outside the class?

There are no requirements to undertake additional study outside this course , but students will be encouraged to visit recommended exhibitions, galleries, art events and collect images and ideas for their own personal projects.

Are there any extra costs (e.g. materials, equipment or books that I need to buy before or during the course)?

The sculpture studio is well equipped and a wide range of tools is available. The studio fee covers basic materials, equipment and technical support available for the studio.

You will need to buy your own an A4 sketchbook and may want to begin to collect materials and develop your own kit and resources as your specialism grows.

Storage facilities are limited in the studio so you may want to take work home with you or make sure it is properly packed away.

You will need to bring a sketchbook and protective apron or overalls.
