Who is the course for?

This course is designed for any one who is interested in creating ceramics, employing the techniques of hand building and wheel throwing. The emphasis is very much on practical work, you will focus on making with clay using a range of different clay body types. You will be encouraged to explore surface decoration through the medium of coloured slips and glazes and will be expected to keep a record of technical examples, collect images and ideas that will support your creative ceramic concepts. There will be practical demonstrations and experimentation with form and function, individual projects with the teacher who will also provide you with constructive feedback on progress made on the course.

What level is the course?

From absolute beginners to advanced learners with prior experience in ceramics, this course is not only flexible in its structure but is also tailored to creative and practical needs.

What previous knowledge/experience/skills are required?

No previous experience is necessary.

What will the course cover and what can I expect to do by the end of it?

You will be introduced to a variety of hand building techniques. There is also a strong emphasis on developing skills on the potter s wheel. You can build up technical samples and reference materials for designs, consider practical issues through demonstrations and experimentation, there will be the opportunity for discussion and individual teacher support throughout the course. By the end of the course you will be able to; Demonstrate a range of hand building techniques using all clay body types. Throw a number of small to medium domestic pieces, cups, mugs and jugs, attach handles. Turn off excess clay waste form thrown work. Be aware of the properties materials and processes used while applying glazes. Understand and observe correct studio practice and follow Health and Safety rules

What teaching and learning methods will be used on the course?

You will be supported in realising your personal goals and projects through 1:1 discussion at regular intervals with the teacher. Handouts and work sheets to refer back to, extra projects throughout the course to stretch faster learners, mixed learning styles, kinaesthetic, audio, and visual, opportunities for individual, pair, and group work. Task based learning, work sheets handouts.

How do we assess your progress on the course?

Assessment on the course is continual observation, peer feedback and 1/1 discussion around your individual learning plan to support your personal development.

What can I do after completing this course?

At the end of the course the final pieces maybe displayed at WMC forming part of a celebratory summer exhibition. Following on from this course learners can continue to develop ceramic skill levels through further courses at WMC.

What extra study/practice am I expected to do outside the class?

There are no requirements to additional study outside the course but learners will be encouraged to visit exhibitions and galleries and collect images and ideas for their own ceramic designs.

Are there any extra costs (e.g. materials, equipment or books that I need to buy before or during the course)?

You will need to pay a one off charge for your clay work to be fired, each piece of work produced will need to be weighed and charged by its poundage currently the charge is £1.50 per pound.. You are advised to buy an A4 sketchbook
